Unconscious bias plays a crucial role in decision-making processes\, influencing risk assessments\, sentencing\, and rehabilitation opportunities. This course\, part of our Courageous Conversations series\, provides professionals with the knowledge and tools needed to identify and address bias within their practice. Designed for those working in the justice system\, this training explores the science and behaviour behind unconscious bias\, offering evidence-based research on its presence in policing\, probation\, and the wider criminal justice system. Participants will be guided through self-reflection exercises to help identify personal biases\, triggers\, and decision-making patterns that may impact their professional responsibilities. Through interactive discussions and case studies\, the course will explore practical ways to challenge racial disproportionality\, improve the accuracy of risk assessments\, and ensure Presentence Reports (PSRs) are free from bias. Attendees will also gain strategies for fostering fairer and more culturally responsive practices\, ultimately reducing overrepresentation and improving support for young people involved in the justice system. By the end of the training\, participants will have a deeper awareness of unconscious bias\, a clearer understanding of systemic disproportionality\, and the skills to implement bias-reducing strategies in their daily work.
